Some History of Edgewater:

The Orum House

2444 Depew Street

Emma (Schmidt) Orum was the daughter of Frank and Elsie (Rink) Schmidt.  The Schmidt's moved to Edgewater in 1891 and built a home at West 22nd and Ames Street.  The home was located on a fifty acre farm tract and here was born Emma on May 7th, 1893 and her brother Louis in 1894.

Emma moved to the Orum House in 1910 and resided here until her death on December 28, 1980.  Many of the furnishings in the home are original to the time that Emma lived here.

The Orum House is closed at this time for repairs.

Edgewater Heritage Center

The building phase of the rehabilitation work being done at 2501 Chase Street is nearly done.  White Construction has completed foundation repairs and will be covering up the concrete block soon.  Additionally, White will install retaining walls, steps at both the front and back doors, and an entry ramp on the 25th Avenue side.

The City advertised for bids for the landscaping phase of the project, and Goodland Construction was the successful bidder.  They have extensive experience working on municipal projects around the Denver area, and we are pleased to have them on board.

Due to delays early in the process, the project is taking longer to complete than originally anticipated.  Goodland will begin working on the walkways and non-materials items such as benches, etc., but planting may have to be delayed until next Spring.

Decisions about the use of the building have not been made.  The Historical Landmark Preservation and Arts Commission has been discussing options for the building at their regular meetings.

The City of Edgewater gratefully acknowledges that this project is paid for through grants from the State Historic Fund, from Jefferson County Open Space, and the HUD's Community Development Block Grant program.

If you have any questions about the Heritage Center project, feel free to call Babette Morrow at 303-468-8461 or email her at babette@rgengineers.com.
